Herbie was one of the first real parody comic books, and even today it's one of the standards to which proper comic book satire is held. Shane O'Shea and Ogden Whitney produced a wonderfully surreal and fun comic book - something today's writers wouldn't recognize if it bite them on the beejeezus.

Whitney's artwork is low-key, and rather draftsman-like, which makes the absurd goings-on he illustrate even more absurd. Herbie and his lollipops save the day every time, even if his dad thinks he's just a "big, fat nothing".

This book should be required reading for any comic fan or professional.

Having sold most of my - ebay knee surgery - comics finds, this allowed me to find panels that spiked the visual memory and so am sufficed to say, satisfied on all terms
I forgot how special these books were when I was young. I used to buy them and have a good laugh.Now if you like your humor PC, don't bother with Herbie. Its a slap at anything and anybody and all in good fun.Maybe for some it might seem a tad dated but, their the ones who are too serious and forget to try a time traveler lollipop before sitting down to bust a gut.
Great art, funny stories and a wonderful savings over individual issues. It's a given to check Herbie out !!!!
this is one of the unknown gems from the 60s. the writing is deadpan, and the art is great. everyone should read Herbie, lest he bop you with that there lollipop!
Greatest Superhero.
Fat, fat like a water rat! It's the Fat Fury, what else needs to be said? Ok, magic lollypops, great printing, wonderful book (I'm working on all the volumes). It will be great to show youngsters how weird comic books could be, back before all the superheroes were grim and constipated.
In my youth we had access to many comics companies, including ACG, which picked up a little traction in the mid 60s by adding some humorous superheroes to it's blend of Chills and Kids mags. While Marvel, and DC Comics aimed a bit higher, more sophisticated child (Bam, POw) ACG had only one writer and a few plots. But the art was often very good, drawn by regular Supermen artists and other DC regulars, plus one holdout from the 40s, who drew Herbie.

These stories are fun to read and a beauty to look at in this well produced hard cover. There was no one like Herbie, a bespectacled fat kid with magic lollipops, who traveled time and space, irresistible to beauties everywhere. This was the ultimate child's daydream, and the mixture of wit and low brow humor was astonishing. While the original price is quite high, a discounted or used copy is a great addition to your 50s and 60s comic book library.
Herbie is a parody of a superhero -- fat, emotionless, addicted to lollipops -- but with amazing powers derived from his lollipops -- flies (but by walking on air), travels back in time (in a grandfather clock), talks to animals (who all know him), indestructible, and on an on. His speech lacks pronouns and articles, but his catchphrase is "You want I should bop you with this here lollipop?" Although famous throughout history, Herbie's powers are not known by his parents. Herbie's father, Pincus Popnecker, is an ambitious but unsuccessful businessman who is dismayed by his lot of having a "little fat nothing" of a son. A recurring theme in Herbie comics is how Herbie helps his father overcome one bad business venture after another, always without the knowledge of his parents. There are many recurring sight gags and phrases.

Important advice to new readers Instead of starting the Herbie Archives with the first story on page 11, I suggest that new readers should start with "Herbie and the Sneddiger's Salad Oil" on page 45 and read forward from there. You can return to the formative stories later.

Publication Notes The Dark Horse volume features cover art where Herbie appears, as well as some ads that ran in Herbie and other ACG comics (such as Forbidden Worlds, Unknown Worlds, and Adventures Into the Unknown). The pages appear to be cleaned up scans of the original comics, replicating the colors used. The pages are about the size of the original comics. There is an article at the front and biographies at the back by Scott Shaw, all worthwhile, but unfortunately printed black on red and produce maximum eye strain.
