Very informative, but ponderous at times, and it assumes quite a bit of prior knowledge of banking procedures and monetary principles.
In February 2006, the Financial Times of London reviewed “The Rise of American Democracy” by Sean Wilentz. In the review, Stephen Graubard of the FT states that “With Jackson, perhaps more than with the others, [Wilentz} revises and expands on the excellent findings of Arthur Schlesinger Jr, still the classic biography today, more than half a century after its original publication.”
Packed with great historical info and relevant to current economic issues. Not a page turner but well worth reading. Pulitzer prize winning book.

Schlesinger's The Age of Jackson is an example of what historical writing should be. It covers not only Jackson's own time in office but also its entire historical context--from Jefferson's egalitarian agrarian democracy (and its failure because of the rise of industrialism) thru to the final hurrah under Andrew Johnson. It mentions everyone that is important in the story, not only Jackson himself but also all of his followers and opponents. It is never dull--the kind of thing one takes to bed to read a bit and then stays up all night reading. I bought a copy to give to a friend, and my own copy is falling apart, but I still read it thru about once a year. And it has all the scholarly apparatus for the facts that it presents without ever being dull reading. Buy it!
This is a really long book, so I don't want to give you the impression that it is short. However, it is just an easy read. Beware, however, that Schlesinger is very obviously PRO Jackson.
Schlesinger does a persuasive job reminding us that the "Jacksonians" (not so much Andrew Jackson per se) launched class politics, in the New Deal sense, in this country back in the 1830s and 1840s. Martin Van Buren -- a sort of FDR avant la lettre (and the President you knew almost nothing about, right?) -- and his circle played a critical role creating active government to ensure economic fairness. After a general review of the achievements and vision of "Jacksonian Democracy," we find fascinating chapters on the birth of pro-business populism ("The Whig Counter-Reformation"), the splitting of the Democratic Party over slavery ("The Free Soil Movement"), and the almost subconscious transformation of the small-government ideology of Jeffersonianism into the reality-based government interventions of Jackson and Van Buren in the service of the same ideals of democracy and equality.

Essential reading, together with Basil Rauch's "History of the New Deal," to understand the high points in America's struggle for a true democracy of opportunity and shared prosperity!
