"The Icecutter's Daughter" is a Christian romance set in 1896 in Minnesota. The hero and heroine meet, respect each other, and are interested in getting to know each other better when a misunderstanding pushes them apart. Once that misunderstanding is cleared up, they declare their love yet still hardly know each other. While they do seem well-suited for each other, I'd have liked more scenes showing the romantic duo getting to know each other.

My main problem was actually in how little I understood the villains. It was clear from the start that the hero's best friend and fiancee were completely self-centered and very manipulative. When they showed up later, it was no secret that they intended to cause him trouble (so much so that I could accurately predict what did happen). My first question was how this disgusting fellow ever became our hero's _best_ friend when the hero didn't have trouble making friends with nice people. My second was why the hero seemed surprised and baffled by their behavior when he knew their character.

Finally, it makes no sense that the hero didn't tell the heroine in private that he wasn't engaged BEFORE he started showing his interest in her. He had to realize this would look dishonorable as long as she and her family believed he was betrothed to another.

There were some details about ice-cutting, but not enough to clearly visualize how it was done. The focus seemed more on the changing technology that would soon replace jobs like ice-cutting and raising draft horses. The Christian theme was to trust God to bring the truth to light even when things look like that won't happen. There was no sex or bad language.

The Icecutter Daughter Land of Shining Water Tracie Peterson 9780764206191 Books Reviews

What I liked cultural and linguistic diversity, a good complicated problem to drive the conflict, a rich setting. There were a couple parts that kept me up late to read.

What I didn't like Every conversation was basically, "I don't know what to do about (problem)." "Pray and trust the Lord." "Wow, God has blessed me to see this differently." I'm religious, but dang it makes for some boring dialogue. Almost every character was perfectly sincere and communicative and faithful and one-dimensional. I skipped over a lot of religious monologue. Anyway, I'm at 80% and the only part I care about has been resolved, so I'm done.
First, I must say I started this book intending to love it. I read many clean old west novels. I love the 1800's and the challenges people faced when life was so simple. I wanted to learn about ice cutting and how all that was done.

I bought the kindle edition AND the audible edition so I could listen to the story and perhaps alternate with reading. I liked the narrator's presentation of the characters and she did a fine job. I made it to halfway through the book and simply couldn't continue reading. I'm so angry at Rurik Jorgensen, I could spit. I don't want to read about a man who can't stand up for himself the first NINE times his so-called best friend takes advantage of him, argues with him, persuades him "to do the right thing". As soon as Nils started threatening Rurik I was DONE. I guess Peterson was trying to show what a God-fearing patient man Rurik was, that he saw the best in people. And that's fine. What's not fine is a 'hero' who's not a hero. I want to read about men who are God-fearing, patient, and strong. I want a man who problem-solves, who goes after what he wants (in this case, Merrill, the leading lady) and knows how to be in charge of his life. Then, when he's doing absolutely everything he can to make Nils and his ridiculous little sister butt out of his life and he's strong and things go wrong anyway, then I care enough to keep reading and to see him succeed. It's a romance, so I know Merrill and Rurik will eventually win and live happily ever after, but I simply can't make myself keep listening or reading. I don't care to see how they bring that miracle about. If Rurik can't man-up, he deserves Svea and her scheming ways. If Rurik can't man up and cut ties with Nils, Rurik deserves the coming train wreck. I won't be around to watch it happen.

Sad thing is I had the other two books in this series (Land of Shining Water) in my wish list. I'm going to delete them. Too many well written books to spend time on stories that make me want to hurl my kindle against the wall.

Sensuality Level Clean, Rated G
Language Rated G
Violence Rated G (at least in first half of book, I can't speak to the second half)
