This was a hard book to read but definitely worth it. Made me laugh hard and cry even harder.
Excruciatingly angsty, off canon, captivating and engaging.
My only complaint would be the side stories. I find that with such a heart-wrenching tale, I have little patience with leaving the main track...
I loved the boldness of the author to write a book that contain so many traits that could potentially put the typical JAFF reader off and to do it with such depth and feeling. I am amazed!

A fifteen year old Elizabeth is at the theatre with the Gardiner's when encountering Mr and Mrs Darcy and viscount Wolfbridge. Both cousins are drawn to vivacious young lady but Darcy has married Anne de Bourgh at an early age.
Anne and Elizabeth become friends until the event that will alter the lives of many and influence the rest of this book.
Elizabeth is violated, although difficult to read, I believe the repercussions are even harder to read.. The story unfolds over several years with the addition of the rest of the Bennet daughters stories along with Elizabeth's struggle, both to recover, to protect her secret and the love story that eventually unfolds.

Heartily recommend!

By happenstance, I've just reread this book and due to the current climate (Autumn 2017), find its relevancy astonishing and strongly compelling. This is a heart rendering depiction of the effects of society's acceptance of deviant behaviors and the life altering effects upon its victims. Forced by propriety into concealment and shame, this story beautifully illustrates aspects of a situation where the consequences affect entire lifetimes and beyond. Highly recommended.
First of all, I NEVER give five stars. The only books that get five stars have to be generation spanning, personally and socially moving epics of the first order. Every other book I feel is excellent just gets four stars.

Yes, this book is that good. To read it as merely 'fan fiction' is to do it a massive disservice.

Using our favorite P&P characters as basic sketches, the author develops them as characters who are fully her own. She then uses them to weave this amazing tapestry of love, tragedy, courage, forgiveness, evil, healing and redemption (with a dash of the politics of revolution).

I should warn you that this is often a tough read. It begins with a terrible, violent act of hate. This act spawns much hardship, indignity, fear and pain. As the story develops there are many moments of confusion and misunderstanding as to where the guilt for this act rests. As with many P&P variations, these misunderstanding are what keeps our two lovers apart. Unlike these other stories, you don't find yourself yelling at the characters to just get over their vain stupidity and get us to our happy ending. Instead, these misunderstandings make you weep for the pain these characters feel, and weep more over the huge obstacles they must overcome. And my tears really did fall.

But you must persevere through the tragedies to truly feel the joys and moments of relief that are found along the way. As I approached each of these moments, I wept again.

I should also tell you, I'm not really a crier. I don't 'get misty' over movies, and I don't believe I have ever cried while reading a book (not ever Old Yeller). Actually, I have always considered an author's ability to make me laugh out loud as a great indication of book enjoyment and quality. It never really occurred to me that a novel could make me cry. And I read a lot.

I don't want to diminish anyone's enjoyment of this book by giving more details of the plot, because I feel these moments should be approached by and revealed to the reader as the author intended. Just read it. You will not be sorry.
Interesting subject matter; unfortunately, I found Darcy to be a first rate ass through most of the book. And Gardiner letting the "child" Elizabeth negotiate her future was unbelievable down to the lack of the mention of rape as opposed to compromised during these negotiations. Also, Darcy seeing Elizabeth as mercenary when she was trying to do right by her unborn child...was the child to grow up with no security? Where was his intellect as he came to terms with his cousin and wife? I also disliked Anne's lack of punishment for her part instead, she is rewarded with a purchased child. I found both Darcy and Anne to be too much like Lady Catherine. As I said, I just found him Unlikeable. My favorite characters were Mary, Richard, Lydia and Mr. Collins. So, inventive, a good read, but -- in my opinion -- flawed.
I've read this before. In bouts and more than once, though not often. It's so potent. I can't handle so much raw emotion but in small doses. The pain I feel on reading it is real. I become that invested in the trials of the heroine. Indignant on her behalf, wanting to offer a comforting hug or a fist bump at her courage and resilience. I just watched a documentary on the BBC called the Harlot's Handbook so I was even more heavily impacted this go round than usual.

The Fitzwilliams are awful people. And I mean that in every sense of the word. And the reader feels that awfulness so deeply. While I've read this level of arrogant pride in other works, never was the victim so well vindicated.

A side note- many reviewers have commented on the lack of resemblance the characters bare with the originals but I disagree. The themes of pride and prejudice are the story's driving force and Elizabeth was very recognizable until something terrible happened to change her. Darcy was unchanged in essentials. The drastic turn the story takes might throw people but the author hasn't strayed from canon so far that the characters ring false. On the contrary, this was an interesting angle to look at them from. The author did a commendable job in creating an original spin.

Excellent read not for the faint of heart.
